96 Hyde Ave

I am writing to you today to find out what is it going to take to shut down GB Scrap!

This place is a mess, a fire hazard, an eye sore and an environmental disgrace!
Would you want to live with a dump like this in your backyard? Would you tolerate this?
I think not.

A proposed 30-40ft fence just won't cut it.
We want them out.
Everyday the people in this neighbourhood are at risk.
Our health, our homes, our trees and wildlife hang in the balance.

How many violations can you count? There are too many to count in my opinion.
You can raise our taxes, oh yes that is a priority.
Our safety is not?
Our little neighbourhood deserves better.

This area is not suited for this kind of heavy industry.
This issue can no longer be ignored.
We the residents will not be ignored.
A band aid just isn't good enough.

We are counting on you Mr. Mayor to make it safe, to make it right.

Sincerely,
A concerned resident of Westbury/Juliet

Subject: 96 Hyde Ave: GB SCRAP
To: lalbanese.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org
Please see the attached letter to the Mayor.

When you came door to door on Westbury/Juliet you wanted my vote.
You said that this neighbourhood was important to you...you raised your children here..
I need to ask you, where are you? What are you prepared to do to help us?
GB Scrap metal could care less about us, the residents...they obviously do not care about the environment either. Do you care Laura?
If someone did care about our little neighbourhood, GB would have been forced to shut-down by now. We would not be in constant danger.

Please take some time from your busy day and help the people who put you where you are.

Sincerely,
A concerned resident of Westbury/Juliet York, Ontario

Here is the response I got today from MPP L.Albanese after sending a letter yesterday.

January 30, 2008

Dear Constituent,

The Ministries of Community Safety, Environment and Labour confirm that on January 26, 2008 at approximately 11:30 a.m. the Spills Action Centre notified the Ministry of Labour on-call inspector of an explosion that occurred at G.B. Scrap Metal Ltd. located at 96 Hyde Avenue in Toronto.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating, I will be sure to keep myself informed of the result.

My office also contacted the Fire Department who confirmed that, although the weekend fire was not a big fire, this is the third one in last three years. The Fire department will have a report on fire code compliance at the site on Wednesday January 30 and I will make sure I am aware of that as well.

I have also been in touch with the Ministry of the Environment to inquire about Spills Action Centres and the legislation and regulations that surround them.
I am in contact with the Spills Action Centre.

My understanding is that the yard is currently legally allowed to operate but I pledge to continue to keep in touch with Ministry officials to ensure that compliance at the site is reliable and that the site is operating according to all regulatory codes.

I will continue to monitor the situation and follow-up on the matter on behalf of the residents of York South-Weston.

Sincerely,

Laura Albanese
MPP York South-Weston
erday.

Lisa, it looks like we all got the same stock response today from Laura Albanese. Not good enough. These types of responses from politicians are not protecting the community from fearing for its safety. I urge you and all residents of the community to keep after them

Hi folks:

As I'm sure some of your recall, while I was the MPP for the area, I was at that site a number of times and brought media out with me on at least three occasions. I encourage you to keep up the pressure. GB should be closed and its licence to operate revoked. I shall do what I can to push for this.

My former colleagues in the Ontario NDP put out a news release today stating they will bring back the Community-Right-To-Know legislation that was not passed by the McGuinty government prior to the last election. That law would offered increased protection to local residents by making it tougher for careless operators like GB to continue their unsafe practices. You can read the release, which refers to the indicents at GB, at this link:

Cheers,

Paul Ferreira
Former MPP, York South-Weston

Derrick, What about calling in to CP24 on Tues for the Talk to the Mayor show?
Just a thought...since he is not responding to any emails let alone reading them!
